Club History

The club was founded by George Forrest in 1965. Starting life at Bolton Grammar School it moved to Breightmet, Bolton in about 1968 and then from there to the Bolton Institute of Technology (B.I.T.) in 1973/74. It was here that Chris Minta joined the club, in charge of Sport at the Institute, he was interested in promoting Badminton in Bolton. As a result the club developed fielding more teams. Players from the Lancashire squad played in the A team and it became one of the premier teams in the Bolton League.

In 1979 B.I.T. sent a team to Paderborn to play table tennis, with spare seats available on the coach some of the male players from the club were able to go along too and play badminton. This town twinning continued for thirty years. Although some of the students from B.I.T. played in some of the teams, other militant students objected to their courts being used by outsiders and as a consequence the club was forced to find an alternative venue. George Forrest, the club founder, wanted the club to have its own premises and provided some funding towards achieving this. The club members began a series of fund raising events to try and get enough money together, looking at old cinemas and other buildings to find something suitable.

A building that was about the right size was identified at Walkers Tannery which was being demolished and so George bought it. The trouble was that the building needed dismantling and the club had no land to re-build it on. Each weekend the men of the club would risk life and limb to dismantle it while the women took to the cottage industry (sewing nighties and making nick nacks) to sell at fetes and local fairs. Things didn't go to plan. The building was eventually dismantled but was stored for about ten years before being sold to someone from Scotland at a complete loss as the club was never able to source any land. Unfortunately in 1988 George died and he was sadly missed. (His widow still attends Bolton Badminton League Presentation Nights.)

Since then the club has played at many venues - Sharples Barn, Dean School, Kearsley Sports Centre to name a few. The club has gone from strength to strength, steadily increasing the number of members and teams. Thanks to all of the coaching activities led by Ray Schofield the club has a regular supply of new players and the club now even has a junior section with teams of their own. The club now plays at Bolton Arena (home to the Badminton Competition of the 2002 Commonwealth Games) after convincing them to convert one of the indoor tennis courts into 4 badminton courts.
